Brown County State Park is
the largest Indiana State Park. This nationally known 15,696
acre facility first opened to the public in 1929. Abe Martin
Lodge, several cabins and a saddle barn were built, as was
a swimming pool.
The park contains many miles of well-marked
foot and horseback trails. About 70 miles of bridle
trails and over 18 miles of hiking trails lead through
the steep, forested hills. The roadless southwestern and
eastern parts of the park can be visited only by foot or
horseback. The Ogle Hollow Nature Preserve contains an
attractive self-guiding nature trail. Some picnic areas
are equipped with shelters and fireplaces.
The park has a nature center with
a snake exhibit, bird-watching room and other displays, The
wildlife inhabiting Brown County State Park include mammals
such as the white-tailed deer, raccoon, gray squirrel, and
various birds including robin, white-breasted nuthatch, bluejay,
cardinal, junco, crow and wild turkey.
Camping sites are available year-round. The
campgrounds have electrical hook-ups and modern comfort stations
and showers. Brown County also has a horsemen's campground
located in the extreme southern part of the park. The parks
inn Abe Martin Lodge contains 84 lodge rooms, as well as
two large meeting rooms, and a dining room. There are also
24 sleeping cabins for rent with a total of 56 bedrooms.
Twenty family cabins, completely furnished, are available
yearround. The park offers a swimming pool, shelterhouses,
playground equipment, fishing on two lakes, bridle trails
and a country store with picnic supplies and souvenirs.
Brown County State Park is a
popular attraction in the fall as the leaves are changing.
The scenery is astonishing.
