Hillenbrand Fish & Wildlife Area is
dedicated to providing quality hunting and fishing opportunities
while maintaining 3,400 acres of upland game and wetland habitat,
lakes and shallow impoundments. 125 acres of the 3,400 acres
is wetland habitat. Hillenbrand Fish & Wildlife area was
named after Indiana businessman John A. Hillenbrand II for
his dedication to Indiana's natural resources and was formed
by reclaimed surface mines.
Fishing is available at Hillenbrand with
primary species being bass, bluegill, redear, crappie and
catfish. Some areas have gravel boat ramps. Hunting is a
popular attraction with game such as deer, rabbit, dove,
quail and woodcock inhabiting the area. Small game, deer
archery and late season deer hunters can pick up daily permits
at a self-service check in area.
One could enjoy watching deer, wild
turkey and various bird species on the property, although
horseback riding, swimming, camping and off road vehicles
are prohibited. Large congregations of migratory waterfowl
can be seen in the wetland areas. All of Hillenbrand Fish
and Wildlife area is open for activities such as dog training,
hiking, and various outdoor activities. Blackberries and
morel mushrooms may also be gathered from the area.
