Monroe Lake is Indiana's largest inland
lake, featuring a scenic stone-bluffed shoreline
and wooded hills. The lake was completed by the Corps of
Engineers and consists of 23,952 acres with 10,750 acres
being lake. Lake Monroe has three state recreational areas
including Hardin Ridge, Paynetown, and Fairfax and contains
a full service marina. The Monroe Lake area was undisputed
Miami Indian land, even though it was occupied by both
the Miami and Delaware tribes. The lake area was acquired
legally from the Indians as part of Harrison's Purchase,
by the Treaty of Fort Wayne. The dam is on Salt Creek,
a tributary of the East Fork of the White River.
Monroe Lake is accessible from State
Roads 37, 46, 446 and 50 by way of many local roads. Several
other state and federal recreational areas surround the property
including Morgan Monroe, Yellowwood and Jackson-Washington
state forests. The Hoosier National Forest, including Deam
Wilderness Area also surrounds the reservoir.
Activites such as boating,
fishing, hiking, hunting, interpretive naturalist services,
picnicking, pontoon and house boat rentals, swimming, waterskiing
and camping make Lake Monroe a perfect place for an afternoon
escape.
