McCormicks Creek State Park was named
after John McCormick, who was the first settler
that laid claim to the area. McCormicks Creek was Indiana's
first state park. The scenic waterfalls and limestone formations
make this 1,924 acre park unique. The steep canyons and high
rocky cliffs make hiking the 17 miles of trails a very beautiful
scenic event.
The Miami Indians had camps along
the banks of the White River to the north and south, but
what is now state park land, was far too rugged for settlement.
It became a hunting ground, offering deer, squirrel, grouse,
and fish from its deep woods and clear streams.
The scenery at McCormicks Creek State
Park is peaceful and serene. The park offers many
activities such as camping, hiking, picnicking, horseback
riding, tennis, and swimming. The Canyon Inn, for those
not willing to "rough it", has facilities for
banquets, and includes a recreation center that is opened
during the summer months. The recreation center includes
such activities as basketball, volleyball, and racquetball
courts. The center also has pool, ping pong, speed hockey,
and foosball tables. McCormicks Creek State Park also offers
13 family cabins which can be rented from April to October.
The recreation center can be rented out during the spring
and fall when it is not open to the public. Some of the
special features of the park include Wolf Cave, waterfalls,
and Twin Bridges.
