Shakamak State Park owes its name to
the Indians, meaning
"river of the long fish". Early residents of the
area mined coal from shaft mines, farmed and operated several
mills and brick plants in the area. In the early 1930's, the
Civilian Conservation Corps workers developed the park.
Shakamak State Park offers many facilities
such as, tennis courts, a swimming pool with a
20 foot plus slide, picnic areas, hiking trails, personal
and family cabin and boat rentals, several fishing piers,
a campground and a large group camp. Enjoy a family picnic
in one of the many shelter houses with fireplaces and playgrounds
for the kiddies. The group camp consists of dorms, showerhouse,
kitchen and dining facilities. Shakamak State Park cabins
are equipped with electric range, refrigerator, showers,
modern restrooms, beds and wood burning stoves. A new family
cabin overlooking the old beach area, is a duplex and is
also available for rent. Reserve early as these get booked
often throughout the year.
In the past Shakamak State Park has
been host to kayak races, state and national swimming competitions,
BMW motorcycle club get togethers, 4-H and church camps,
and bicycle tours. Visitors to Shakamak State Park could
hike along one of the four incredible scenic trails, fish
on one of the numerous fishing piers, take a scenic drive
through the park, paddle boat ride on one of the three Shakamak
lakes, swim in the pool with the awesome slide, or horseback
ride on one of the horses at the Shakamak stables. Accomodations
at Shakamak State Park, for Jasonville, Indiana visitors,
