Jasonville, Indiana, "The Gateway to Shakamak", is located just 3 miles from Shakamak State Park. With old mining areas, and help from the Conservation Corps, outdoor parks and facilities have surrounded the area. Several of the outdoor facilities and campgrounds in the community were formed from old strip mines. "Shakamak", which means "waters of the long fish," comes from the Delaware Indians' name for the Eel River. In 1928, land was donated by Greene, Sullivan and Clay Counties which in turn formed Shakamak State Park.

The Jasonville area has such facilities as Indiana State Fish and Wildlife areas for hunting and fishing, campgrounds surround the community, and lakes are abundant. If you enjoy peace, quiet, and the outdoors and a slow paced atmosphere than the Jasonville area is for you.

Outdoor activities are not the only attractions in the area. The surrounding southwestern Indiana counties of Greene, Sullivan, Monroe, Clay, Owen, Vermillion and Vigo offer an abundance of activities. The Indiana State Capital, Indianapolis is only a couple of hours away and offers a great deal of opportunity for recreation. While staying in Jasonville be sure to take some "road trips" and check out some of the surrounding attractions.

With roller skating rinks, bowling alleys, movie theaters, golfing, dining and shopping nearby, the Jasonville area provides a wealth of recreational activities most anyone could enjoy.
