The
Jasonville Nine Baseball Team

I've found another photo that you might
like.... that of a Jasonville baseball team. Again there
is no notation on it to give the date or identities.
What I do know
is that the surly-looking guy with the J arm patch, sitting
second from the left, was an uncle who was born in 1889,
Frank Miller. I find it hard to judge ages of people in
old photos,
but if these guys are post high school, maybe in their
20's, my guess is that the photo might be from around 1910-1915.
My mother
had mentioned that there were very few young men, like
these, left in Jasonville during the Great War, only
those who were the sole support of their families. So,
arguably, that might put it
before 1916. (She also said that the young men left had
very few dates, because the young women felt it would be
disloyal to the guys overseas.) My memory gives an impression
that the team was semi-pro.

While looking through some old
yearbooks we found an interesting section in the 1976 Shakamak
School Yearbook on some local history we thought you might
be interested in. This section included area landmarks,
some history on the clubs and organizations in the area
along with some history on the city of Jasonville. We have
scanned these in pdf format so you must have Acrobat Reader
in order to view the pages.

Comments: My
grandmother was Rebah Pauline Eaton, she and her family
lived in Shakamak. Her grandfather Elmer Eaton born 1869,
he died in Sullivan city Mine in Feb 1925, he was part
of 52 men lost in the mine. My grandma was born in 1909.
The house was still standing up and til a few years ago
they tear it down all that is left is the foundation.
But I do not know where on the acrage of shakamak it
was. Plus my family always enjoy coming to Shakamak.
We spent my 16th birthday camping with family and friends
for 2 weeks Thank you
