All programs are on Eastern Daylight Savings Time and are held at the Nature Center unless otherwise stated!

Saturday, July 12
Nature Center Open from 12-3 p.m. today.
9:00 a.m.    HP/HP:  Take a Hike!  Meet the Naturalist at Trail 3 for a moderate 1.5 mile hike.  Wear hiking shoes; no flip-flops please.  Bring a bottle water and some bug spray.  EMB
1:00 p.m.    Hoosier Quest Patch and Pin Program Hour   It’s our new program for kids and families.  Stop by the Nature Center and learn how you can work towards a patch or pin.  We meet one hour a day to get you started or help you as you are working along.  NO groups please.  Groups interested in earning a patch should ask about The Hoosier Pathfinder Program, which includes a fee.  EMB

10:00 a.m.  Nature’s Recyclers   CSI has NOTHING on us!  Join us for a short hike to find evidence of who is making all this soil…DLF

3:00 p.m.    Wee Beasties Under High Power   Ever wanted to be a scientist?  Well, here’s your chance!  Become a scientist as you collect insects and use microscopes and hand lenses to examine insects.  Find out who has polka dots on its legs!  DLF
8:30 p.m.    ”By The Light of the Moon” Hike  Meet at the Campground Gate.  We’ll use the light of July’s full moon to guide our way as we take a closer look at the sensory adaptations of nocturnal animals! EMB/DLF

10:00 a.m.  Tree ID Spree  Meet outside the NC for a short program on how to identify some of the common trees found in Shakamak State Park.  It’s a great program for anyone doing leaf collections this coming fall!  EMB

3:00 p.m.    Tree Shirts  Bring your own white t-shirt to decorate with various tree leaves.  Great for learning identification.  EMB

5:00 p.m.    Pool Program:  Creature Feature:  Box Turtle! Nothing to do during your pool break?  Head out to the Pool Deck for a short program on box turtles.  EMB
7:00 p.m.    HP/HP: Sunset Stroll  Join the Naturalist at Trail 2, just past the Log Cabin for a leisurely hike.  We’ll discuss the forest as a multi-layered cake!  EMB

3:00 p.m.    Walking In Style   Create your own walking stick – we’ll provide the sticks, you bring the pocket knife.  Recommended for children 10 and older.  Parent supervision is required. EMB/DLF
8:00 p.m.    Row, Row, Row Your Boat   Get paddle happy and join the Naturalists for a relaxing trip around Lake Kickapoo.  Get there early, space is limited.  First come, first serve. EMB/DLF

8:00 a.m.    HP/HP: Early Morning Meander  Get up and get some fresh air on this 3 mile hike around Lake Shakamak!  We’ll watch for deer and other critters moving about in the new day.  Bring binoculars if you have some or borrow a pair of ours.  EMB

9:00 p.m.    Sensing the Night Hike   Enjoy the night by using all your senses while learning about the special adaptations nocturnal animals have on this moderate hike.  Roughly one-hour in length.  NO FLASHLIGHTS. EMB/DLF

10:00 a.m.  Trees 101  Learn how to identify ten common trees of Shakamak State Park.  It’s not really a college course, but be prepared for a quiz!  EMB

8:00 p.m.    FishIN in the Dark  Enjoy an evening of fishing at the boat dock on Lake Kickapoo.  Bring your glow-bobbers and glow-in-the-dark bait.  Children MUST be accompanied by an adult.  EMB

9:00 a.m.    Free FishIN Derby!  Registration begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 10 a.m.  The derby will last until noon.  For children 16 and under only.  Bring your own pole and bait if you have them, if not bait will be available for purchase in the camp store, which is located next to the pool.  Prizes will be given for biggest catch and most caught.
